Though it has been over 40 years since the tragic death of Marilyn Monroe, she remains-to this day-a cultural icon. While remembered by many for her beauty and sexuality, Monroe was a truly remarkable actress, one who could handle the toughest dramatic roles and the broadest comedic roles with equal aplomb.
While her acting career began in the 1940s, Monroe became an enormous star in the 1950s, appearing in 23 films during the decade. She had leading roles in some of the decade's biggest hits, including All About Eve, the Asphalt Jungle, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Bus Stop, How to Marry a Millionaire and Some Like it Hot.
Her co-stars included such Hollywood legends as Clark Gable, Laurence Olivier, Jack Lemmon, Bette Davis and Cary Grant.
Her off-camera "co-stars" were equally impressive. In 1954 she married Joe DiMaggio. Doomed by DiMaggio's jealousy, the marriage lasted a mere nine months. Two years later, she wed playwright Arthur Miller, in what was called one of the more improbable marriages in history. This marriage, too, was brief.
She was also rumored to have had affairs with both Robert and John F. Kennedy and her "Happy Birthday" to the president remains the most memorable rendition of the song- ever.
