It is hard to imagine a person who hasn't been touched in some way by one of the many epic films of Steven Spielberg. A masterful director, Spielberg has the rare ability to create films that can both blow you away in their sheer scope and move you with their profound, human stories.

Early in his career, Steven Spielberg demonstrated a remarkable capacity to create entertaining movies on a grand scale. With movies like Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Jaws, E.T. and the Indiana Jones saga, Spielberg was able to amaze us, terrify us and leave us spellbound.

It was in the 1990s, though, that Spielberg tackled many of his most serious and memorable subjects. Between 1993 and 1998 Spielberg directed Schindler's List, Amistad and Saving Private Ryan, taking on issues of genocide, slavery and war. He won the Oscar for Best Director for both Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan. Both films were also nominated for Best Film, with Schindler's List taking the Oscar.

It's not that Spielberg forgot his action/adventure/fantasy roots during the 1990s. The decade also saw him direct Jurassic Park and Jurassic Park II, two wildly successful blockbusters.
