Selection Criteria

The Who's Who 60 was created to commemorate the 60th Edition of Who's Who in America. Our formula for selecting honorees was a simple one: select five individuals from each of the twelve decades we've been publishing Who's Who in America. From each decade, beginning with the 1890s, we have chosen one individual to represent each of the following five areas:

  • Science and Technology

  • Newsmakers

  • Business and Industry

  • Sports

  • Entertainment, Arts and Letters

  • To compile the list, our editorial and research staffs were called upon to nominate individuals for consideration using the following selection criteria:

  • Individuals who had enormous impact in their fields of endeavor

  • Individuals who helped to define their eras

  • Individuals whose achievements have stood the test of time

  • In a few cases, multiple individuals were chosen in the same decade in the same category. That is why you will find both Wright Brothers (Orville and Wilbur), the Robber Barons (John D. Rockefeller and Andrew Carnegie), the Google team of Sergey Brin and Larry Page, the baseball kings of the 1950s (Mantle, Mays and Snider), and the intense NBA rivals Larry Bird and Magic Johnson.

The Who's Who 60 presents Americans doing what Americans do best. The individuals profiled on the following pages are innovators, dreamers, achievers. Many of them opened doors for future generations, while others have been called upon to lead the country through difficult, tumultuous times. Some have entertained us. Others have awed us with their athletic achievements.

Obviously, all of the members of the Who's Who 60 have appeared on the pages of Who's Who in America. All of the individuals featured in the decade of the 1890s were included in the very first edition of Who's Who in America. And all of the living members of the Who's Who 60 can be found in the 60th Edition of Who's Who in America.

In the actual directory, each decade is represented in a two-page spread complete with archival photographs, a newspaper front page illustrating a key historical event of the decade, and a timeline representing events, discoveries and achievements of the decade.

The Who's Who 60 can also be found on our online database, Marquis Who's Who on the Web, along with over 1.2 million other leaders and achievers from around the world, past and present.

As in any project involving subjectivity, there was serious debate over virtually every individual presented in the Who's Who 60. We are certain that you will agree with some of our decisions and disagree with others. We, of course, would love to hear your opinions and suggestions.
